    The IEA Technology Roadmap Energy-Efficient Buildings: Heating and Cooling Equipment shows how technologies such as solar thermal, heat pumps, thermal energy storage and combined heat and power for buildings have the potential to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 2 gigatonnes (Gt) by 2050--around one-quarter of today"s emissions from buildings--and save 710 million tonnes oil equivalent (Mtoe) of energy by 2050.

    In near zero energy buildings (NZEB) built in Baltic countries, heat production systems meet the challenge of large share domestic hot water demand and high required heating capacity. Due to passive solar design, cooling demand in residential buildings also needs an assessment and solution. Heat pump systems are a widespread solution to reduce energy use. A combination of heat pump and solar thermal collectors helps to meet standard requirements and increases the share of renewable energy use in total energy balance of country.

    This report is a review of irrigation technologies for smallholders in the context of improving rural livelihoods, especially in regards to the prospects for sub-Saharan Africa. The role of traditional technologies is evaluated and modern water distribution technologies, such as sprinkler and trickle irrigation, are reviewed. Low-cost irrigation systems, including such innovations as the use of treadle pumps and drip-kits are then examined.
