In March 2011 the European Commission released its communication "A Roadmap for Moving to a Competitive Low Carbon Economy in 2050" (COM(2011)0112), providing scenarios and targets on how different key sectors--power generation, industry, transport, buildings and construction, as well as agriculture--can make the transition to a low-carbon economy over the coming decades. This leaflet provides a synopsis of the aluminium industry"s response to the challenges in that communication.

Technology
Main problems in the field of electromobility are the high price and the low capacitance of rechargeable batteries. Important elements of such batteries are aluminium collector foils and their interfaces towards carbon based electrode material. The ohmic resistance of the interface should be minimal. But in air Aluminium generally is oxidized. This thin oxide layer increases the ohmic resistance. Because of this often aluminium collectors are chemically pre-treated to minimise the negative effect of the oxide layer. This chemical step is not only not eco-friendly but also expensive.

This Global Life Cycle Inventory Data for the Primary Aluminium Industry report is an update for data year 2010, following similar reports for 2000 and 2005. It has been prepared with an objective to collect all significant life cycle inventory (LCI) data (raw materials and energy use, emissions to air and water and solid waste generated) on primary aluminium ingot production from bauxite ore at the global level. This 2010 report is the reference material for aluminium environmental assessments and its use is to be considered as mandatory for life cycle practitioners.

The international aluminium industry has adopted a global sustainability programme, the International Aluminium Institute"s (IAI) "Aluminium for Future Generations" initiative, the overall objective of which is for the aluminium industry to be in a position to continue its global growth, while optimizing its environmental performance. Recycling is a key element of this initiative and continues to be at the core of the global industry"s path to sustainable development.
