This paper, by drawing from the lessons learnt from research and development activities for about two decades in Malawi and Zambia, presents the case study of agroforestry-based land use practices (fertilizer tree/shrubs) to identify and highlight opportunities as well as policy/institutional challenges for assisting smallholder farmers to enhance climate change adaptation and mitigation in southern Africa region.

This book argues that well-designed decentralised renewable energy projects are both a mitigating and adaptive response to climate change. Decentralised renewable energy projects (DREs) address core sustainable development priorities and build adaptive capacity to climate change, without increasing greenhouse gas emissions. The first section explores linking mitigation and adaptation through energy access while the second section looks at the Clean Development Mechanism and decentralised renewable energy.

This report presents early research from a collaboration of Canadian and African researchers. It covers conflict prevention and resolution, migration, energy, health and food security. Recommendations made include calls for action at the national, regional and global levels. At the national level, increased awareness of development implications of climate and the building of climate change knowledge and capacity are recommended. Regionally, a coordinated and common African position is advocated.

This report demonstrates the use of climate information in assessing adaptation needs and implementation of adaptation interventions.

It provides an outline of the change in thinking that is happening as adaptation moves from theory to practice, how this translates into a different approach for assessing adaptation needs, and the implications of this shift for climate information and services provision.

The Adaptation Learning Programme for Africa (ALP) has sought to increase the capacity of vulnerable households in sub-Saharan Africa to adapt to climate variability and change. Through insightful case stidies from the four-country programme with vulnerable communities in northern Ghana, southern Niger, eastern Kenya and northern coastal Mozambique this research demonstrates participatory initiatives aiming to pioneer and deepen practical understanding of Community Based Adaptation (CBA). ALP’s approach gives explicit focus on integrating gender equality and diversity into the process.

The Climate Adapted Villages model aims to make farmers and local communities capable of organizing themselves, identifying climate threats and practicing climate smart agriculture, enabling them to adapt to the current consequences of a changing climate. The model focuses on building capacity and expertise in local communities, so that they can manage their own recourses and implement measures for climate change adaptation, in a systematic and effective way. Communities gain a strong ownership to the activities, and the method can be transferred of other areas.
