During the reporting period, CTCN supported more than 75 countries and enhanced capacity building for climate technology development and transfer across the five systems’ transformation areas.

    Water storage is and will be a key strategy for climate change adaptation. One of the major impacts of climate change in the mountains will be on the availability of water. This, together with increased demand from a growing population for water for agricultural, industrial and domestic purposes, is likely to turn water into a major issue in the countries of Asia in the coming years. One way to address the growing gap between demand and availability of water seems clear: store more water when it is available in excess and release it when it is needed.

    This is a summary of a report on climate change adaptation research knowledge and capacity gaps in China, commissioned by DFID (UK) and IDRC (Canada) to consider support for a programme of applied research on climate adaptation in Asia. Although scientific research capacity on assessing the effects of climate change in China is strong, adaptation as a specific domain of research effort is a new concept.In accordance with donor priorities, the study involves the identification of vulnerable groups in geographical regions likely to face great stress from climate change.

    This report aims to highlight and raise awareness about the exposure and vulnerability of the energy sector to climate change. It identifies adaptation options available to each source of energy generation as well as for the distribution and end use of electrical energy. The report focuses on electric power generation, its transmission, and its distribution. A second publication, "Guidelines for Climate Proofing Investments in the Electric Power Sector", provides a systematic project-level approach for assessing climate risk and climate-proofing investments in the sector.

    This report presents early research from a collaboration of Canadian and African researchers. It covers conflict prevention and resolution, migration, energy, health and food security. Recommendations made include calls for action at the national, regional and global levels. At the national level, increased awareness of development implications of climate and the building of climate change knowledge and capacity are recommended. Regionally, a coordinated and common African position is advocated.

    Environmental Research Institute (ERI) is a flagship Institute for Environmental, Marine and Energy research in Ireland. The ERI has over 300 researchers working in interdisciplinary and currently has 45 live research projects focused on climate mitigation, adaptation and understanding. Focus areas include energy modelling, marine renewables, biofuels, energy efficiency, climate adaptation platforms, modelling greenhouse gas fluxes, atmospheric chemistry and carbon liabilities.
