  • Conversion of Supermarket Refrigeration System from F-Gases to Natural Refrigerants

    Type:
    Publication
    Publication date:
    Monday, November 1, 2010
    Objective:

Currently, all supermarket refrigeration systems in Southern Africa operate on fluorinated refrigerants with high ozone-depleting and/or global warming potentials. Modern, environmentally friendlier technology based on natural refrigerants is still completely unknown there and is seen with some concern. Most equipment owners, refrigeration engineers and service technicians have been reluctant to discuss these technologies due to potential safety issues.

  • CO2 utilization in the perspective of industrial ecology, an overview

    Type:
    Publication
    Publication date:
    Monday, July 4, 2016
    Objective:
    Sectors:

Carbon dioxide emissions from anthropic activities have accumulated in the atmosphere in excess of 800 Gigatons since preindustrial times, and are continuously increasing. Among other strategies, CO2 capture and storage is one option to mitigate the emissions from large point sources. In addition, carbon dioxide extraction from ambient air is assessed to reduce the atmospheric concentration of CO2. Both direct and indirect (through photosynthesis) pathways are possible.

Policy making is required in cases in which a public good needs to be either maintained or created, and private or civil initiatives cannot deal alone with this. Policy making thus starts with a phase of problem identification and determining whether there is a problem that needs to be dealt with. Rapidly evolving contexts exert influence on policy makers who have to take decisions much faster and more accurately than in the past, also facing greater complexity. There is a need for a method that lowers the lead time of the exploratory phase of the policy cycle.
