  • A New Approach to Quantify Reserve Demand in Systems With Significant Installed Wind Capacity

    Type:
    Publication
    Publication date:
    Monday, May 2, 2005

This paper proposes a new methodology that quantifies the reserve needed on a system considering the uncertain nature of the wind power. The reliability of the system is used as an objective measure to determine the effect of increasing wind power penetration. The methodology is applied to a model of the all-Ireland electricity system, and results show that as wind power capacity increases, the system must increase the amount of reserve carried or face a measurable decrease in reliability.

  • Offshore Renewable Energy Development Plan

    Type:
    Publication
    Publication date:
    Saturday, February 1, 2014

This report identifies the opportunity for the sustainable development of Ireland’s abundant offshore renewable energy resources to increase indigenous production of renewable electricity. The report sets out key principles, policy actions and enablers for delivery of Ireland’s significant potential in this area. It presents the key findings of both a “strategic environmental assessment” and an “appropriate assessment,” as well as plan-level and project-level mitigation measures.

  • Ensuring a Secure, Reliable and Efficient Power System in a Changing Environment

    Type:
    Publication
    Publication date:
    Wednesday, June 1, 2011

The power system of Ireland is driving major changes that require a fundamental understanding of key challenges, including system frequency response, ramping services, voltage control and portfolio performance. This report describes how EirGrid and SONI are putting in place a programme to address these challenges.

  • Operating High Variable, Renewable Generation Power Systems: Lessons Learned from Ireland and Northern Ireland

    Type:
    Publication
    Publication date:
    Wednesday, September 16, 2015

Panelists in this webinar review lessons learned from Ireland and Northern Ireland on operating power systems with high levels of variable renewable generation. They provide an overview of the DS3 program, whose objective is to transform the electricity system in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

  • All Island TSO Facilitation of Renewable Studies

    Type:
    Publication
    Publication date:
    Tuesday, April 6, 2010

This publication examines the challenges of integrating significant volumes of wind power generation onto the power system of Ireland. The studies in the report provide the first significant modeling of power system behavior at unprecedented instantaneous penetrations of wind, according to the authors, and the findings are a key element towards meeting Ireland's ambitious 2020 renewable energy targets.

  • Energy Savings Trust (website)

    Type:
    Publication
    Publication date:
    Thursday, August 1, 2013

Formed in 1992, the Energy Saving Trust is a social enterprise with a charitable foundation. Through its partnerships, it offers impartial advice to communities and households on how to reduce carbon emissions, use water more sustainably and save money on energy bills. The trust works with governments, local authorities, third sector organisations and businesses. Its activities include delivering or managing government programmes, testing low-carbon technology, certifying businesses and consumer goods, and developing models and tools.

  • Integrating Variable Renewable Energy in Electric Power Markets: Best Practices from International Experience

Integrating Variable Renewable Energy in Electric Power Markets: Best Practices from International Experience

    Type:
    Publication
    Publication date:
    Sunday, April 1, 2012

This report presents the diverse approaches to high renewable energy integration in Australia, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Spain and the United States. From these cases, the authors present a collection of best practices for policymakers and other stakeholders to encourage high renewable energy penetration in their own countries. The authors find that sharing of experiences among countries can lead to better outcomes for all.

  • A Reformed Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) – Including new Mechanisms for Sustainable Development

A Reformed Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) – Including new Mechanisms for Sustainable Development

    Type:
    Publication
    Publication date:
    Tuesday, January 1, 2008

The second of the Capacity for Development for the Clean Development Mechanism (CD4CDM) perspectives series, this collection of 13 papers aims to address the question of how to reform the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in a post-2012 climate regime. The papers included in this collection raise four key issues related to CDM: sustainable development and equity, institutional reform, expansion of project categories, and scaling up mitigation.

  • Policy Pathways: Energy Performance Certification of Buildings, A Policy Tool to Improve Energy Efficiency

    Type:
    Publication
    Publication date:
    Friday, January 1, 2010

This report provides a "how-to" guide for policymakers and relevant stakeholders on the essential elements of implementing building energy performance certification programs. This report identifies good practice examples from countries around the world and outlines a pathway of ten critical steps to implement energy performance certification of buildings.
