    WIPO is the global forum for intellectual property services, policy, information and cooperation. It is a self-funding agency of the United Nations, with 187 member states. WIPO’s mission is to lead the development of a balanced and effective international intellectual property (IP) system that enables innovation and creativity for the benefit of all. The mandate of the organization, governing bodies and procedures are set out in the WIPO Convention, which established WIPO in 1967.

    REN21 is a global renewable energy policy network that connects a wide range of key stakeholders to facilitate knowledge exchange, policy development and joint action towards a rapid global transition to renewable energy. The REN21 Secretariat is located in Paris, France. Together, REN21 and REEEP established http://www.reegle.info, an information portal on clean energy policy, regulation and financing.

    The Global CCS Institute is an international membership organisation that works to accelerate the development, demonstration and deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS), a vital technology to tackle climate change and provide energy security. CCS is used to help cut down green house gas emissions by preventing CO2 from being released into the atmosphere. The Institute was established in 2009 with initial funding from the Australian Government to accelerate the development of CCS globally.

    The Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC) is an entity that supports the UNEP’s International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC), based in Japan. GEC is dedicated to the transfer of environmentally sound technologies, in both developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The foundation aims to contribute to Japan’s international efforts on the environment, sharing project collaborations as well as promoting Japan’s rich conservation knowledge and experience in developing nations.

    Water storage is and will be a key strategy for climate change adaptation. One of the major impacts of climate change in the mountains will be on the availability of water. This, together with increased demand from a growing population for water for agricultural, industrial and domestic purposes, is likely to turn water into a major issue in the countries of Asia in the coming years. One way to address the growing gap between demand and availability of water seems clear: store more water when it is available in excess and release it when it is needed.

    The Hindu Kush Himalayan region encompasses an area of 4.2 million km2 of hills and mountains in the countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan. With its vast expanses of snow and ice, the region it is known as the water tower of Asia, which is being significantly affected by climate change. The meltwater from Himalayan snow and ice feeds 10 large river systems of South Asia: the Amu Darya, Brahmaputra, Ganges, Indus, Irrawaddy, Mekong, Salween, Tarim, Yangtze and Yellow Rivers.
