The second edition of the Africa Innovates magazine, Climate Champions: 50 Homegrown African Innovations Tackling Climate Change, showcases the power of innovation from across the African continent to fight climate change. Jointly produced by UNDP and the CTCN, and building on the magazine’s inaugural edition highlighting African innovation to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic, this edition of Africa Innovates tells the stories of 50 African climate warriors who have developed unique homegrown climate solutions.

In its 2017 Progress Report, the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) describes the key types of technology-related assistance that developing countries are seeking as they strive to fullfill their Nationally Determined Contributions and National Adaptation Plans. Water is fundamental to the well being of women and men both in the household and productive activities and is key to poverty reduction and development. Water is also a strategic resource in that its control is a source of power. Interventions that change the control, use of and access to water resources inevitably raise gender issues and opportunities. This paper presents information on the role of Sudanese medicinal, culinary and aromatic plants in the conservation of natural resources and in the generation of income for rural women. In most parts of the Sudan women constitute the principal labor force for both cash crops and food production. Women's role in the agricultural labor force increased during a period of economic hardship, resulting from natural and man-made disasters, in the 1990s.
