This installment of the International Energy Agency's (IEA) Technology Roadmap series explores the potential for technological improvements in fuel economy. The authors envision a 30%-50% improvement in average fuel economy by 2030. One finding of the report is that most technologies required for reaching this goal are already commercially available but their penetration in the marketplace is low due to various barriers. The authors have created a fuel economy readiness index that policymakers can use to measure the extent to which various measures are or are not already in place to fully exploit the benefits from fuel-saving technologies.
