This document was developed when WWF and local communities located in Putumayo, Colombia, were concerned about the social and environmental impacts that would be caused by a new road construction. Putumayo is located in the Amazon piedmont. This place is considered as a priority for global conservation and climate regulation, which sits within both the Amazon biome and the Northern Andes. As a result, the paper presents the analysis of environmental and social impacts that allowed to establish strong mitigation, compensation and funding plans. It focuses on what WWF has learned about facing future threats to ecosystems and communities due infrastructure projects. It wants to show how the work to improve the quality of consultation and participation at the local can reinforce the existing social processes and create the conditions for a strong monitoring during the implementation stage.
