This brief report summarizes the total asset value of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the developing world and notes that dependable, reasonably priced energy services are essential to SME growth. In particular, energy services contribute to increasing productivity, improving food preservation, promoting communications, increasing operating hours, improving work conditions, and creating marketplace attractions. Three successful U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) projects are highlighted.
