This report describes Coimbatore, India as a case study for reducing carbon emissions while improving municipal public services. Coimbatore undertook a citywide energy assessment in 2008 to identify sectors with the highest energy consumption and carbon emissions, revealing that the water supply and street lighting sectors accounted for nearly 75% of municipal sector carbon emissions. Pilot projects and large-scale overhauls of the two systems were proposed and undertaken, while at the same time, awareness about renewable energy and energy efficiency was raised in the community.
