The authors of this report examine the mix of resources currently in use and discuss that which is available to supply energy in the region. They find that the clean energy potential of the East African region is sufficient to develop a strong economic, social and environmentally beneficial development plan that can exceed regional energy needs, make more significant progress in increasing energy access, and do so in a way that achieves environmental sustainability and contributes to a significantly more diverse and vibrant private sector. However, this “green growth” model will not be accomplished without significant coordination and cooperation in the management of the energy generation, transmission, and distribution investments, according to the authors.
