Women in Lesotho make up the majority of the population and the majority of the disadvantaged. However they also make up the majority of the literate population which could form the basis for improvement of their social status. Disempowering structures and laws, which undermine the position of women, need to be removed, for example, by changing the minority status accorded to women in the law. The profile of women in Lesotho is part of a series of publications, Beyond Inequalities, that describe the status of women in the 14 countries of the Southern Africa Development Community as well as analyse women's situation in relation to existing government and NGO policies and programmes. The information provided by the series can be used for development and planning purposes and indicates the gaps for future research.
