The paper reviews reports on an analysis of smart appliances and reviews different types of appliance “smartness.” It reviews smart appliance standardisation in Japan, the United States, Europe, Australia and China, and the development of relevant standards by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The paper also outlines current and future implications of smart appliances on appliance energy efficiency policy.
