This paper reviews the potential of alternative fuels and powertrains to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from all motorized transport in the short and long term. In addition to considering the magnitude of the GHG emissions savings that could be achieved by each option, the paper also reviews the evidence on costs, timescales for implementation, barriers and secondary benefits.
