The Problem: Existing studies have shown that the poor bonding strength between hydrophobic rubber and hydrophilic cement hydration products greatly lowers the engineering properties of rubber modified concrete (RMC) and thus limits its application. The Technology Solution: Baoshan Huang and research group at The University of Tennessee have developed a “two-stage treatment” method for improving the bonding between rubber particles and cement hydration products. The treatment involves making rubber particles hydrophilic through a coupling agent followed by coating the particles with a layer of high-activity cementitious powder. The rubber particles after the two-stage treatment demonstrate a much stronger bond cement hydration product and have a high potential to increase and broaden the application range for rubber modified cement substances.
