Dye sensitized solar cells (DSCs) are lightweight devices made from inexpensive materials and can be adapted for a variety of indoor and outdoor applications with minimal environmental impact. As such they are a promising technology for the cost-effective conversion of solar energy to electricity. Unfortunately the current technology only produces cells with energy conversion efficiency of up to 12% which impedes the commercialization of this technology for mass production.
This new class of inexpensive organic dyes can be used in high efficiency dye-sensitized solar cells. The dyes have the ability to increase the energy conversion efficiency of state-of-the-art devices 10 to 20%.
