Background

PM as one of the main emissions of diesel engine is detrimental to human health which has already aroused great concern from the government of various countries and pushed the governments to set more and more strict standard for exhaust emission. Up to now one major method to prevent PM pollution is DPF. It's well known that traditional DPF can'€™t get rid of PM accumulated in its filer cartridge. It is a physical filtering method which temporarily reduces PM emitted to the air. And it is necessary to regenerate the DPF by two general approaches continuous and intermittent regeneration. However the effects of the two methods are not ideal. So the key problem is regeneration.

Structure

In a tube whose two ends are assembled with multi punch plates and some high temperature resistance meshy materials solid quartz balls which are composed of SiO2 and Al2O3 and other minerals are closely filled. The quartz balls are sintered at high temperature over 1600C. The 3 dimension cellular structure of quartz balls creates air channels which is irregular but interconnected.

Principle of Operation

When the engine is running high temperature exhaust flow under different loads and working situations passes the air channels continuously. The quartz balls absorb and collect heat energy and emit infrared rays with high energy. Then the temperature of the cellular structure raises to 500-800C. Because of the infrared characteristics and high thermal inertia of quartz material its cooling down is very slow. Furthermore the outer shell is covered by 3M heat insulation material which keeps high temperature for long time and makes it in effective temperature range for thermal oxidation. When diesel exhaust passes high temperature cellular structure it stars thermal oxidation status and process and get rid of PM and NOx. Automatically regeneration doesn'€™t need extra energy. It can get rid of 66% PM and more than 10 NOx. Meanwhile because of the special air channels the sonic of exhaust is changed. So it has excellent noise attenuation performance as well. When purifying the exhaust of diesel engine this installation can replace the old acoustic filter. So it is also cost efficient.
