From today, developing countries will have stronger technology and financial backing to help meet their commitments to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. This is thanks to a new agreement being signed between the Green Climate Fund and UN Environment, at the request of Parties to the Climate Convention.
Under the agreement, the Fund will collaborate with the Climate Technology Centre and Network to accelerate energy-efficient, low-carbon and climate-resilient developments.
"This collaboration won’t just reduce the risk of global warming,” says Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw, UN Environment Deputy Executive Director. “It will also reduce the related risks of migration, pollution, poverty and inequality, while creating jobs and economic opportunities.”
The partners began working together earlier this year through the Green Climate Fund Readiness and Preparatory Support Programme that has approved funding to support the governments of Ghana, Myanmar, Palestine and Tonga in advancing green technology initiatives to be delivered by the Climate Technology Centre.
Pa Ousman Jarju, Director of the Green Climate Fund’s Country Programming Division, said “it is essential the resources we deploy are well targeted to the needs of recipient countries.” “Only by our respective organisations working closely together can we ensure this happens,” he added.
The Climate Technology Centre and Network is the implementing arm of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Technology Mechanism. It is hosted and managed by UN Environment and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and supported by 400 network partners around the world.
The Green Climate Fund (GCF) is an operating entity of the Financial Mechanism of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement, dedicated to supporting global efforts to respond to the challenge of climate change.
