This initial technology needs assessment is part of the larger process involved in the preparation and compilation the national communication to the COP members under the UNFCCC. This assessment consisted of six related activities. The first activity is a preliminary overview of the sectors which are to be analysed. The second activity involves the identification of technology for criteria for investment. The third activity is the identification of priority sectors and key technologies, which will be based on the key criteria for the technology and the importance of the sector.

This updated technology needs assessment handbook is designed to assist countries in making informed decisions in their technology choices. Building on lessons from earlier TNA efforts over the past decade, it offers a systematic approach for conducting technology needs assessments in order to identify, evaluate and prioritize technological means for both mitigation and adaptation.
