    This report describes the results of work that has been done by the “Sustainable production of biomass” project group on formulating sustainability criteria for the production and processing of biomass for energy, fuels and chemistry. The project group compiled a set of generic sustainability criteria and corresponding sustainability indicators which are divided in to six themes:

    The report profiles agencies whose technologies have been recognised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India. It includes key agencies involved in various stages of the supply chain of biomass gasification for thermal and electrical end-uses, such as research and development, manufacturing, marketing and operation and maintenance.

    This paper explores the opportunities for mitigating atmospheric carbon emissions and generating development income in developing countries through a combination of sustainable agricultural practices on existing lands, slowing tropical deforestation, and reforesting degraded lands.The analysis shows that over the next ten years, forty-eight major tropical and subtropical developing countries have the potential to reduce the atmospheric carbon burden by about 2.2 billion tonnes of carbon.

    This book lays out the possibilities:
    • using energy from wood biomass and mill residuals instead of fossil fuels;
    • substituting wood products for fossil fuel-intensive steel, concrete, brick, and aluminum building components;
    • adjusting forest management practices to capture additional atmospheric carbon dioxide;
    • retaining forest cover and its potential to mitigate climate change;
    • capturing and storing atmospheric carbon in forest carbon "pools" and long-lived wood products; and

    This report describes the situation of biofuels in Uruguay. It presents an analysis of the current situation of the energy sector, the energy matrix, energy policy and regulatory framework and the use of biofuels for electricity system and transport system. The report also presents some evaluations of environmental and economic impacts for biodiesel, biomass and bioethanol production.

    Climate change is likely to complicate the achievement and sustenance of development goals. Its effects on poverty are not well understood, and existing poverty reduction strategies do not adequately support climate resilience. This brief discusses the nexus between climate change and development, and how the achievement and sustainability of the 2015 Millennium Development Goals will be affected. The brief outlines the following ways in which climate change impacts on key elements of poverty reduction strategies:

    Agriculture and water resources are two strategic sectors vulnerable to climate change and climate variability in Central America. The integration of soil and water conservation (SWC) techniques into small-scale hillside farming systems has been considered in recent strategies of adaptation. Several SWC techniques have been adopted by small-scale hillside farmers. The most frequently adopted techniques are those involving biomass management. Crop residue management, no-slash-and-burn and living hedgerows of several plant species are some examples.
