This report aims to highlight and raise awareness about the exposure and vulnerability of the energy sector to climate change. It identifies adaptation options available to each source of energy generation as well as for the distribution and end use of electrical energy. The report focuses on electric power generation, its transmission, and its distribution. A second publication, "Guidelines for Climate Proofing Investments in the Electric Power Sector", provides a systematic project-level approach for assessing climate risk and climate-proofing investments in the sector.

This publication examines the sectors, technologies and policy measures that will be central in the transition to a low-carbon energy system. It addresses the following questions: (1) What are the roles of coal and gas in meeting the stringent decarbonisation requirements for the power sector consistent with IEA modelling of global climate goals? (2) What are moderate carbon prices accomplishing in the electricity sector, and how can they be helpful as part of a package of other policies?

This report provides the most current, comprehensive analysis of the costs and performance of renewable power generation technologies available today. The results are largely based on new, original analysis of around 8,000 medium- to large-scale commissioned or proposed renewable power generation projects from a range of data sources. The analysis provides simple, clear metrics based on the latest reliable information, thereby helping to inform the current debate on renewable power generation and to assist governments and private sector investors in their decision-making.

Renewable energy technologies can help countries meet their policy goals for secure, reliable and affordable energy to expand electricity access and promote development. This paper on biomass for power generation is part of a series on the cost and performance of renewable energy technologies produced by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The goal of these papers is to assist government decision-making and ensure that governments have access to up-to-date and reliable information on the costs and performance of renewable energy technologies.

The development objective of the Coal-Fired Generation Rehabilitation Project for India is to improve energy efficiency (EE) of selected coal-fired power generation units through renovation and modernization (R and M) and improved operation and maintenance (O and M) practices.

India has the fifth-largest power generation portfolio worldwide, combined with a rapid growth in energy consumption. This can be attributed to several factors such as economic growth and increasing prosperity, growing rate of urbanization and rising per capita energy consumption. Power generation from renewable sources is on the rise, with the share of renewable energy in the country’s total energy mix rising from 7.8 per cent in FY08 to 12.3 per cent in FY13.
