This book examins the food security threats facing 11 of the countries that make up West Africa - Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo - and explores how climate change will increase the efforts needed to achieve sustainable food security throughout the region. West Africa's population is expected to grow at least through mid-century. The region will also see income growth. Both will put increased pressure on the natural resources needed to produce food, and climate change makes the challenges greater.

In most cases, women are not involved in the planning, development or management of marine and coastal resources. Integrating women's and men's usage of these resources into the establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs) increases the chance of both women and men participating in and benefiting from the MPA. This case study highlights the attempt to fully involve women in fisheries and coastal resource management in Cayar, Senegal - at the onset, women and men in the community were both involved in the participatory process of establishing the MPA.

The increased stress to the system brought about by climate change makes reform in global agricultural policies arguably even more important.
