The DRC commits to reduce its emissions by 17% by 2030 compared to business-as-usual emissions (430 Mt CO2e), or a reduction of slightly more than 70 Mt CO2e avoided (Ministry of the Environment, 2009).

ObjectiveTechnology
Background: Sensors currently used for detecting the presence of a given analyte such as a toxin in solution or in air require direct contact with a power supply. Distributed sensing systems or “sensor networks” are an emerging technology that promise the ability to wirelessly monitor and manipulate an environment via a spatially distributed network of small and inexpensive sensor nodes.

Light detection and ranging (LIDAR) is an optical remote sensing technology that can measure atmospheric properties by illuminating the target with laser light and analyzing the backscattered light. Current wind LIDAR systems operate on a fundamental concept of Doppler shifts and involve sophisticated expensive equipment. Other available systems require multiple spatially separated LIDAR sensors and expensive data acquisition systems to make wind profile measurements.
