This study assesses the environmental and socio-economic of renewable energy projects in India--particularly from solar photovoltaics and onshore wind farms--combining primary and secondary research, including site visits and a literature review. The report concludes that existing governance structure or legal framework is sufficient to mitigate or manage environmental and social impacts. It recommends that conflict free and readily available area be used for future renewable energy projects and that natural resources used by renewable energy projects be regulated.

The wind power industry in Australia is expected to grow rapidly over the next decade, primarily due to a forthcoming expanded national renewable energy target (RET) which will mandate that renewable sources provide approximately 20% of Australia’s electricity production by 2020. However, development of new wind generation in Australia has stalled as a result of several barriers to project finance, the mechanism through which most wind farms have been developed historically.

Objective
Researchers at McGill University have developed a novel controller for Doubly Fed Induction Generators (DFIG) which are widely used in wind turbines. This controller allows for a robust decoupled sensorless control. This approach will enable continually optimal performance of the DFIG without the need for the operator to update the parameters of the unit. This approach can be easily implemented with DSPs and FGPAs and may also be applied to motor controls. Applications: As world energy consumption grows nations are faced with difficult and costly decisions to satisfy its needs.

Objective
This surface treatment reduces trailing edge noise on low-speed airfoils. Specifically this product could have a significant impact on the noise produced by wind turbine blades.

The focus of this innovation is a new topology and control technique for energy storage utilization to provide short-term support for wind energy and mitigate the mechanical stress on wind turbine gearboxes. Dr. Nasiri has utilized ultracapacitors (supercapacitors or double layer capacitors) as an energy storage element on the DC bus of a full four quadrant power conversion system or doubly fed induction generator system.

Numerous developing and emerging countries have ambitious plans for the development of renewable generation. Other countries show interest in renewable generation but corresponding plans are pending due to concerns relating to the consequences of fluctuating electricity generation. In both cases, the impact of renewable generation on system reliability and system security needs to be analysed in order to assess related risks and to propose mitigation measures for ensuring a secure and reliability power system operation in the presence of large penetration of renewable generation.
