Nationally Determined Contribution to expand in clean energy options such as geothermal, and to abate its GHG emissions by 30% by 2030 relative to the BAU scenario of 143 MtCO2eq and in line with its sustainable development agenda.
The Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) presents stories from its network members showcasing climate change technology solutions. Through its network, the CTCN delivers technology solutions, capacity building and implementation advice to developing countries at their request.
CTCN Network member Solvatten, a Swedish social enterprise, has developed an innovation that can save millions of lives and ease daily burdens for families living in poverty around the world.
Women are often at the centre of food crises and are disproportionately affected by hunger, yet their important role in providing solutions is often overlooked. This paper lays out some of the key issues in modern food crises, discusses the role of food aid in addressing them, and explores opportunities to ensure that women's voices and perspectives are central to the design of agricultural and food aid policies. The paper focuses on the United States' food aid programme, which constitutes half of all global food aid.
Gender relations have a powerful influence on how environments are used and managed, and thus on patterns of ecological change over time. Yet environmental trends and shocks also impact on gender relations - for example, environmental degradation may alter the gender distribution of resources. This IDS Bulletin aims to integrate gender issues into analysis of the environment in ways which will lead to progressive change for women.
This document provides a summary of literature which explores links between women's roles in the provision of fuel for the household, and their vulnerability to gender-based violence (GBV) in displaced settings. It surveys and summarises international guidelines and principles on fuel provision and GBV. The document reviews two case studies from Kenya and Sudan, and highlights lessons which can be learned from these. The desk review identifies obstacles in this area and key gaps in knowledge on fuel-related issues for displaced people, particularly women.
Rural household economies dependent on rainfed agriculture are increasingly turning to irrigation technology solutions to reduce the effects of weather variability and guard against inconsistent and low crop output. Organisations are increasingly using market-based approaches to disseminate technologies to smallholder farmers; and, although women are among their targeted group, little is known of the extent to which these approaches are reaching and benefiting women.
The First Africa Food Security & Adaptation Conference: Harnessing Ecosystem-based Approaches for Food Security and Adaptation to Climate Change in Africa was held from 20-21 August 2013 at the UN headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. Convened by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), other UN agencies, governments and other stakeholders, the conference explored ecosystem-based approaches to enhance food security, ecosystem productivity and climate change adaptation in Africa.
A person’s gender often dictates whether they gain or lose in environmental disasters: where women lack basic rights, more die from natural disasters than men; where they enjoy equal rights, the death rate is more equally matched.
