Integration of green spaces in planning

    Objective

The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) has produced this guidance document for forest managers to serve as a companion to the FAO's 2010 guidelines to support policy-makers. Its aim is to assist in better assessment and responses to climate change challenges and opportunities, by providing all kinds of forest managers with generic adaptation and mitigation actions which can then be tailored according to specific contexts.

This annual report for 2011-2012 of the World Agroforestry Centre advocates the introduction of 'evergreen agriculture'. On one hand, agroforestry can improve livelihoods, restore degraded soils and raise crop productivity. On the other hand, conservation agriculture, which involves disturbing the soil as little as possible, keeping the soil covered with organic matter and rotating crops, has also helped African farmers to increase their crop yields and incomes.

The purpose of this situational analysis is to assist the deliberations and evaluation to be undertaken by the Forum convened by the Government of Dominica. Prepared with the assistance of local experts, this analysis draws from the management plans of the two National Parks and recent studies. The purpose of the situational analysis is to compile and synthesise the most pertinent information on the National Parks, adjoining communities, and climate change, thereby providing a sound foundation from which to propose the highest priority adaptation measures.

Karamoja is a dryland sub-region in north-east Uganda, where 82% of the population live under the poverty line. It is troubled by climate variability and climate change, where floods and droughts have had a particularly detrimental effect.

Trees are at the heart of Karamoja’s ecology, providing livelihoods and nutrition for livestock and people when all else fails; trees also provide Karamoja with fundamental ecosystem services. Thus there is a need for evidence about the role that trees play in Karamoja.

Forest ecosystems that have the ability to adapt to climate change can provide for the livelihoods of forest-dependent people and communities who are partners in safeguarding forests and supporting the mitigation of climate change. To sustain this partnership, these people should actively participate in the decision-making process and receive financial compensation for their efforts. This brochure demonstrates how measures and policies can be shaped to simultaneously address climate change, biodiversity loss and poverty.
