The Energy Research Centre is a research and academic type of institution established in 1989. The institution provides thought leadership and research on key issues related to climate change mitigation in developing countries under the following key focal areas:  Energy- Environment and Climate Change, Energy- Poverty and Development, Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, and Energy Systems Analysis & Planning. 

EED Advisory Limited is an interdisciplinary consultancy firm with service offerings in the energy and environment space delivered through four practice lines: (i) sustainable energy, (ii) climate change, (iii) natural resource management and (iv) commercial project development. EED Advisory Limited operates through staff located in Nairobi and partners across the globe.

The Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC) is an entity that supports the UNEP’s International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC), based in Japan. GEC is dedicated to the transfer of environmentally sound technologies, in both developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The foundation aims to contribute to Japan’s international efforts on the environment, sharing project collaborations as well as promoting Japan’s rich conservation knowledge and experience in developing nations.

Energy and Environmental Development Research Center (EED) is an institution committed to policy and economic research on energy and environment, technology development, as well as professional training, institutional strengthening, and capacity building. EED’s service areas cover: i) climate change/low-carbon economic development; ii) new/renewable energy development; iii) energy efficiency improvement; iv) environmental protection in rural and regional areas; v) industrial and urban pollution control; and vi) energy and environment advisory.

CO2GeoNet is a non-profit scientific Association comprising 26 research institutes spanning 19 European countries and is the independent European scientific authority dealing with all aspects of geological storage of CO2. The Association draws together more than 300 experts, researchers and postgraduate students. CO2GeoNet started as a Network of Excellence under the EC 6th Framework Programme (2004-2009) and became a non-profit scientific Association in 2008 registered under French Law.

FICCI is the largest and oldest apex business organization in India established in 1927 as not for-profit organization and it has its presence through nation-wide membership of corporates and chambers of commerce & business association. The Technical services division of FICCI (RCM & FQF) undertakes consultancy studies and capacity building activities in the fields of environment, energy, and water management & quality areas, including macro & micro level studies leading to policy formulation & implementation.

Generating electric power based on geothermal energy is attractive (i) because of the low CO2 emissions and (ii) because electricity can be produced constantly, independent of the availability of wind or sunlight. These characteristics make geothermal energy an important option for safe, cost-effective and climate friendly power production. The main caveats are that geothermal energy is not available everywhere and that it is uncertain whether the resource will actually be found at a given site.

This technical paper describes the status of geothermal power in Latin America and the Caribbean. Several development partners are active in the region aiming to assist in geothermal energy development. Project approaches differ depending whether they are conducted in the framework of technical or financial cooperation. Determining factors also include the funding source, multilateral, bilateral, regional bank funding and others. Project approaches are presented and their effectiveness analyzed.
