    Objective

In Mexico agricultural activities are very important in rural areas as a source of income and food supplier. Examples of major projected impacts for the agricultural sector in relation to the variation of temperature are decreased crop yields in warmer environment due to stress caused by heat, increased pests and diseases, increased devastating fires, the reduction in water supply and water quality problems and algal blooms.

    Approach

Fire occurs in most parts of the Miombo woodlands and is used for a variety of purposes, including hunting and farming. However, fires can have significant negative ecological and socio-economic impacts such as a reduced water supply; decline in biodiversity and agriculture production; increased pollution of water sources; and reduced carbon sequestration. Despite years of regulation and attempts to control, there are no apparent solutions to the fire problem in most districts of Tanzania. In fact, fire incidence is believed to be increasing.

This policy brief, produced by Care International, outlines a bilateral Reduced Emissions form Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) pilot project – the Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership (KFCP).

The KFCP project aims to reduce deforestation and forest degradation of peat swamp forest by mitigating the frequency and severity of fire, protecting existing peat land and rewetting and rehabilitating degraded peat land. It also aims to develop livelihood options that do not rely on illegal logging or fire in peat lands.

The Argentina Solid Waste Management Emission Reductions Project aims to help mitigate climate change through the effective reduction of carbon emissions caused by the methane (GHG) generated in the landfill. At local level, the project aims to improve final solid waste disposal practices, reducing the risk of uncontrolled fires and explosions in the landfill and contributing to better air quality through a reduction in hazardous trace gases contained in LFG.
