    Context

In Costa Rica, the role of forests in climate change adaptation and mitigation is widely acknowledged and various political and financial mechanisms have been developed to support ecosystems in facilitating adaptation processes and act as carbon sinks that directly contribute to mitigation. However, there is a lack of instruments to facilitate access to information for improving the decision-making process for climate change adaptation and mitigation when it comes to the management of forests and associated ecosystem services.

Recognizing the significance of their natural and cultural diversity and the vulnerability of their ecological, social and economic values from world events and natural disasters, Grenada, made a committment in 2008 to conservation.

As with most small-island developing states, and many continental countries considered developed, Grenada has made modest gains in protecting and managing its nationally significant natural and cultural resources.

The plan for protected areas in Grenada is composed of two parts.

    Objective

According to this paper, good ecosystems management is critical for managing climate extremes and disasters. It plays three positive roles: delivery of ecosystem-based adaptation; delivery of co-benefits for livelihoods and biodiversity conservation; and support for climate mitigation. Healthy ecosystems, whether natural or modified, have a critical role to play through adaptation by reducing the risk of impacts from climate extremes and disasters on human society. Investment in sustainable ecosystem management has, thus, the potential to provide improved livelihoods and wellbeing.
