Smallholder farmers have an important role to play in the prevention of climate change by reducing net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, they are not benefitting from international financial mechanisms established as a result of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This paper examines finance and risk-related obstacles hindering smallholders from participating in current carbon finance mechanisms.

This study assesses the determinants of choice of indigenous climate related strategies by smallholder farmers in northern Ghana. The study uses primary data obtained through community focus group discussions and household surveys, and subjected to the Multinomial Logit regression model. The report seeks to fill an identified knowledge gap on this issue whilst contributing knowledge to the general adaptation literature.
