University researchers have developed a system and method to utilize multiple context clocks which are event-driven activities such as user behavior network status and variable electricity rates combining with internal electronic clocks to adjust the duty cycle of an electronic system such as plug-load devices and appliances. The present invention is a method in which electricity usage context information is utilized in an external or internal clock system to govern the duty cycle of a plurality of electronic devices and appliances. The clock is a combination of more than two clock inputs.

This first-of-its-kind technology gives customers a chance to see how each home appliance performs and how much energy each device is using. The invention consists of myPowerMap™ adaptor and myPowerMap™ web portal. The myPowerMap™ adaptor plugs into any home outlet and can remotely monitor the condition of multiple appliances. The results can be viewed on a free Web-based program and contain easy to read charts and graphs.

Background: This invention describes the fuel cell architecture and the means to fabricate this architectore that would likly result in a high performance micro-fuel cell. The use of MEMS-based fabrication techniques for the manufacture of fuel cells offers the promise of increased performance out of a small package. Performance parameters in this context include power density (power per unit cell area) specific energy (energy per unit mass) efficiency (electrochemical and fuel utilization) operating temperature reduction cost and possible integration with control and feedback electronics.

Technology Description: This NDSU invention is a ceramer precursor coating composition which can be used to form ceramer coatings having high tensile modulus and tensile strength while exhibiting a relatively moderate strain-at-break value. The coating composition includes an unsaturated oil stock and a sol-gel precursor which includes a mixture of at least two different sol-gel precursor species. The use of two sol-gel precursors has resulted in superior film properties over the use of a single sol-gel precursor.

  • Background: University researchers have developed a miniature relay switch with an overall volume of less than 100 mm3 that can handle up to 40 W of DC or 60 Hz line power. This invention also relates to methods of manufacturing these relay devices directly within or on any of the following using standard electronic manufacturing techniques: lead frames substrates microelectronic packages printed circuit boards flex circuits and rigid-flex materials.

    Objective

Brazil has more than 50 million old household refrigerators. Most of these are energy-inefficient and still contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which are ozone layer depleting gases having also an extremely high global warming potential (GWP). Currently, scrap collectors (so called catadores) collect old refrigerators from slum areas (favelas) and dismantle them in order to recover and sell any valuable materials such as metals and plastics. In this process, the CFCs from the refrigeration circuits and insulation foams are released into the atmosphere.

    Objective

Still today, most room air-conditioning systems worldwide contain HCFC-22 as refrigerant. In China, with 260 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions per year, they are the main source of ozone- and climate damaging HCFC-emissions. The air-conditioning sector is a fast growing sector in China with a huge impact on the global market as the majority of the world market is produced here. The predominant replacement options for HCFC-22 are hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) which are ozone-friendly but contribute to global warming.
