Eldis is an online information service providing free access to relevant, up-to-date and diverse research on international development issues. The database includes over 40,000 summaries and provides free links to full-text research and policy documents from over 8,000 publishers. Each document is selected by members of our editorial team. Eldis is hosted by IDS but our service is delivered by a growing global network of organisations including IID in Bangladesh, CSDMS in India, Soul Beat Africa, and the National Library Service in Malawi.
These partners help to ensure that Eldis can present a truly global picture of development research. We make a special effort to cover high quality research from smaller research producers, especially those from developing countries, alongside that of the larger, northern based, research organisations.

The Climate Adapted Villages model aims to make farmers and local communities capable of organizing themselves, identifying climate threats and practicing climate smart agriculture, enabling them to adapt to the current consequences of a changing climate. The model focuses on building capacity and expertise in local communities, so that they can manage their own recourses and implement measures for climate change adaptation, in a systematic and effective way. Communities gain a strong ownership to the activities, and the method can be transferred of other areas.

For many years, scientists have been predicting the impact of climate change. In Latin America and the Caribbean, predictions range from water shortages to an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events. The effects of climate change could significantly reduce the ability of ecosystems to operate properly, threatening development projects throughout the region.A report from
the Working Group on Climate Change and Development in the UK describes the
effects of climate change and environmental degradation in Latin
    America and the Caribbean.

Effective responses to climate change must include people in climate-vulnerable regions in the development of adaptation and mitigation strategies. The media in these regions can play an important role in communicating the issues, but the media in many developing countries shows little interest in the climate change debate.Research from Panos London, UK, examines the
experiences of journalists and media professionals in Honduras, Jamaica, Sri
Lanka and Zambia. These countries have all recently suffered severe changes in climatic

Central American states are aware of the implications of the climate change challenge and are attempting to combat it through the use of the abundant renewable resources of the region for energy generation and fossil fuels substitution. At the international level, the markets for greenhouse gas emission reductions and renewable electricity certificates have been fragmented. This picture is changing but a great deal of knowledge is required from the project developers to maximise the carbon benefits for their projects.

This paper highlights the challenges that governments face in implementing their international climate change policy commitments and the means to addressing these challenges. The authors note that international action on climate change is a relatively new phenomenon and legal systems were designed prior to the establishment of the multilateral climate change regime. Therefore, countries face systemic legal and institutional gaps and challenges in responding to climate change at the domestic level. The paper presents 12 recent examples of best practices in legal and institutional reform.

Climate predictions for Central America point to an intensification of dry conditions as a consequence of increases in temperature, to severe water stresses, and resource deterioration, as a result of the combined impacts of climate change by 2025. Brosimum alicastrum or Maya Nut, a wild-harvested nutritious seed, is an excellent drought and climate change-resistant food for rural communities.

The climate change adaptation project discussed herein aids in enhancing the long term viability of the Mesoamerican reef's diverse ecosystems through lobbying for the incorporation of sound management and conservation practices that consider both the potential and actual impacts of climate change in combination with other direct anthropogenic threats (pollution, over-fishing, habitat degradation, etc.) on coastal ecosystem health, thereby promoting sustainable livelihoods and natural disaster protection to dependent communities and sectors.
