Eldis is an online information service providing free access to relevant, up-to-date and diverse research on international development issues. The database includes over 40,000 summaries and provides free links to full-text research and policy documents from over 8,000 publishers. Each document is selected by members of our editorial team. Eldis is hosted by IDS but our service is delivered by a growing global network of organisations including IID in Bangladesh, CSDMS in India, Soul Beat Africa, and the National Library Service in Malawi.
These partners help to ensure that Eldis can present a truly global picture of development research. We make a special effort to cover high quality research from smaller research producers, especially those from developing countries, alongside that of the larger, northern based, research organisations.

This paper draws on a legal review and field data to assess the distribution of forest and wildlife revenues from economic operations in logging and wildlife extraction to forest communities in Cameroon. It has an emphasis on the socio-distributional aspects, and draws lessons for the future design and implementation of REDD+ benefit sharing.

Climate change is already affecting many developing countries. In Africa, over 70 percent of workers rely on small-scale farming dependent on direct rainfall. Even small changes to weather patterns can threaten food security and health. These impacts present a huge challenge to the coordination of aid efforts and the design of development policies. Many experts estimate that Africa will suffer some of the
worst impacts from global warming in terms of loss of life and economic
effects. The situation is made worse by existing problems, including widespread

Pastoralism is a free-range livestock production system. It is practised in all of Africa’s dryland regions, and in some communities it is the main source of food security and income. But will pastoralism survive in the changing climate? This issue of Joto Afrika provides research findings, lessons learnt and success stories from across Africa.Statistics from African Union’s policy framework show that pastoralism contribute between 10 to 44 percent of the Gross Domestic Product in the countries that they live in.

Gender often dictates who gains and who loses in environmental disasters: where women lack basic rights, more will die from natural disasters than men; where they enjoy equal rights, the death rate is the same.

Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and enhancing forest carbon stocks in developing countries (REDD+) started as a global initiative. More than 40 countries are developing national REDD+ strategies and policies, and hundreds of REDD+ projects have been initiated across the tropics. This book wants to inform these national and local processes, by asking some basic questions: How are participating countries going to reduce emissions and increase carbon stocks that they hope to be paid for through global mechanisms?

Since 2007, it has been hoped that REDD+ would deliver on the 3E+ criteria (effectiveness, efficiency, equity, social and environmental co‑benefits) for strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This report highlights that the early enthusiasm for REDD+ has dissipated among some stakeholders – this is largely attributed to the failure to attain an international climate change agreement.

This newletter contains four short articles discussing the potential for financing carbon sequestration services. The articles particularly focus on this issue in the context of the Kyoto protocol and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Below are the titles of the four articles and some of the key points made by their authors: Access to finance for community forest management under the UNFCCC and Kyoto Protocol

This publication is a contribution to the ongoing debate on the design of national strategies to reduce deforestation and forest degradation while contributing to the wellbeing of forest-dependent communities. It is the result of a South-South exchange in 2011, which brought together key decision-makers from the Congo Basin, Madagascar and Brazil to learn from Brazil’s community forest management experience.

This document analyses energy systems in a climate change context. Many energy policies are driven by the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However current mitigation measures fail to take into account the full impact of increased climatic variability. Given energy’s importance in the economy and in the promotion of ecodevelopment, it is vital that vulnerabilities within the energy sector be understood and substantially reduced. The report explains why a metric for the vulnerability and resilience of energy systems is needed and proposes a methodology.
